Problems of Tobacco

As a leading preventive care head, our dental multi-specialty continuously stands by the patients going through quitting smoking of tobacco.

The Dangers of Tobacco

The cigarette smoke comprises more than 4,000 chemicals, including carbon monoxide, tar, arsenic, lead, and benzene. The tobacco smoke contains close to 50 cancer-causing agents. Smoking not only causes coughing, shortness of breath, and expectoration but also promotes premature aging of the skin; it is the main risk factor for debilitating illness, shortening life by a decade on the average. Smoking-related health problems include peptic ulcers, hypertension, stroke, cardiovascular diseases, arteriosclerosis, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema. Cigarettes are a major cause of cancers other than lung, throat, and esophagus, including cancer of the bladder, kidney, and cervix.

Quitting Smoking: A Challenging Journey

Smoking is the leading preventable cause of death in the world. The addictive power of tobacco is formidable, however, with only 3% to 10% of the tobacco smokers are able to give it up for at least one year without outside support. On the other hand, the success rates are 15% to 20% higher with an unspecified kind of outside help.

The Benefits of Quitting

Good news: it is something you can do, even after having smoked for many years! The risks of disease will decrease dramatically shortly after you quit. Studies show the risk for a heart attack decreases just days after quitting and is cut in half during year one. By year five, the risk is almost the same as someone who has never smoked.

Personalized Support at Our Clinic

Examples of one-on-one sessions are provided at our clinic as tobacco prevention consults. At this initial stage, we make a proper diagnosis for specific needs to be identified that the client may have. Our thorough assessment goes to the extent of managing symptoms of anxiety or depression, nicotine dependence, breath carbon monoxide levels, and early identification of symptoms for chronic lung disease identification.

Developing a Smoking Cessation Plan

We discuss many things with the patient: past quit attempts, what brought them back to smoking, fears, motivations, pharmacological supports, including nicotine replacement, Champix, and Zyban and health implications of smoking and consequences of tobacco use on general health. We develop a quit plan—individualized to the patients’ specific needs and wants—with available pharmacological options: nicotine replacement (patch, lozenges, gum, inhaler or spray), Champix and Zyban.

Understanding Pits and Fissures

The areas where pits and fissures occur are the chewing surfaces of teeth. Dental plaque can accumulate in the pits and fissures in teeth, thus being sheltered from daily oral hygiene activities such as brushing and flossing. Some pits and fissures are so narrow that even a single bristle can’t clean them.

Preventing Cavities with Sealants

We use a type of varnish called a pit and fissure sealant to prevent cavities in the crevices of your teeth. Your tooth will be cleaned, and if our doctors determine you need a sealant, we will then put a solution on the tooth to etch the surface and get the area dry. Then we will place the sealant and use a special light to help cure the  sealant. Quick, painless.

Benefits of Fluoride Varnish

Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay. With a fluoride varnish, applied with a soft brush, hardening sets in as soon as the varnish is applied; the process is very fast once contacted by saliva.

How Fluoride Varnish Works

Fluoride varnish acts in decay development by stopping demineralisation; enhancing contrition of the enamel to acid attack, accelerating remineralisation and by the high concentration inhibition of bacterial metabolism. Varnishes like Duraphat® provide high concentration- temporary fluoride dose that remains long in the teeth for several hours which is an essentiality for slow fluoride release.

Hello Sleeping Teeth

Understanding Bruxism

Bruxism is the consistent clenching and grinding together of the teeth. It usually occurs as a result of stress and anxiety, even in a sleeping person. The said behavior can lead to serious oral consequences for the sufferer. Abnormal bites, missing, or cracked teeth are among the contributing factors to bruxism.

Identifying Bruxism

Signs of bruxism may include dull headaches, a sore jaw, or even tenderness in your TMJ. A dental exam may reveal jaw tenderness or abnormalities in your teeth. Constant grinding of the teeth may lead to broken teeth, tooth loss, and costly dental care such as bridges, crowns, root canals, or even dentures.

Solutions for Bruxism

Some of the ways of relieving bruxism include: wearing mouth guards at night, professional psychiatric assistance, use of exercise, or muscle relaxants. Bruxism can be relieved by reducing the intake of caffeine and, essentially, not consuming alcohol or even chewing gum. To stop grinding, one can place the tongue between the teeth; one can also keep his mouth open during the grinding process to minimize the accumulated pressure.

Understanding Snoring and Sleep Apnea

Snoring occurs when the flow of air through the mouth and nose becomes physically obstructed, often by soft tissue in the back of the throat, resulting in the vibration. Loud, frequent snoring may be a sign of sleep apnea.

Treatment Options

CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure), oral appliance therapy, and upper airway surgery are some of the sleep apnea treatments. Other behavioral therapies which can treat sleep apnea include losing weight, not smoking, and avoidance of alcohol and sedatives as they may also further contribute to sleep apnea severity.

Importance of Mouth Guards

Mouth guards offer protection like a shield against any possibility of injury in the sports that may happen in the mouth, teeth, gums, and lips. We fabricate various sports-specific materials and customized types of night guards.

Comprehensive Dental Care

We also perform prosthodontic treatments, including full-ceramic fillings, crowns, bridges, and veneers. Endodontic treatments are performed in those teeth in which caries has reached the pulp cavity. Being equipped with the latest technologies, we take care that every patient gets a disease-free mouth.
